Vintage German Hunting Dagger – Etched Blade.
The tradition of German Hunting daggers and swords goes back to the medieval era, but in more recent times they have become an integral part of German hunting and Forestry uniforms. This beautiful example I believe is post WW2 and very interesting because of that. If we start at the pommel, you can see it is a Third Reich army officers dagger pommel. It has a stag antler grip with a white metal ferrule at its base. It has a white metal shell guard with acorn knops on the ends of the quillon. The blade is also an Army officer’s dagger blade, this has been etched with a forestry scene to one side. It has a black leather scabbard with white metal chape. The white metal used looks to me to be nickel. It is un-marked which would also tally with just post-war production. But by the overall quality of this piece, it must be by one of the top makers of the time, having to use leftovers from their army contract.
It is in wonderful almost mint condition and measures 15 inches long.
