Scarce US 1871 Spanish Socket Bayonet.
Scarce socket bayonet for the 11.5 mm M1871 rolling block rifle.
The Remington patent rolling block rifle was manufactured under license from the Remington Arms Company by the Spanish government primarily at its armoury at Oviedo but also in more limited quantities at the Euscalduna facility in Planencia, Spain. The M1871 rolling block rifle was the standard Spanish infantry arm from its adoption in 1871 until nearly the end of the 19th century.
The bayonets to fit this rifle were both manufactured in the US and Spain, the difference being the US made bayonets had a 3 inch socket and were issued without any marks, where as the Spanish made bayonets had a 2.625 inch socket and were stamped with Spanish ordinance proof marks.
This is a US made example and holds all the typical characteristics including the US rolled steel scabbard rather than the Spanish leather scabbard with brass chape.
A very fine example of this usual US made bayonet which comes in excellent original condition and measures 21.25 inches in scabbard.
