WW1 Mercantile Marine War Service Medal to Mabbs from Ireland.
A lovely example of the Mercantile Marine War Service Medal correctly named to Thomas Mabbs. Thomas was born in Cork Ireland in the December of 1883. He probably was serving in the merchant navy as soon as he was old enough to work. In January 1912 while Thomas was working as a Quarter master with the Cork Steam Packet company, there was an incident in Inniscarra near Cork. A Woman had fallen into the river and Thomas seeing her in trouble dived from the side of his ship to save here, in the heat of the moment he forgot he was wearing oil-skins and heavy boots. The woman, Mary Ann Corcoran, grabbed at him pushing him under, endangering both lives. But all was well in the end and Thomas was commended for his bravery.
Thomas served with the Mercantile Marine during the Great War, and he was awarded 1919, he is also entitled to the British war medal.
This medal in in excellent condition and on its original ribbon and comes with some copied research.
