WW1 Era Officers Signet Ring North Irish Horse.
A 9ct gold shell signet ring worn by an officer of the North Irish Horse Yeomanry regiment pre-WW1. Fist a little about the ring. It is marked ‘Gold Shell’ this is a kind of gold plating but instead of applying a thin layer of gold via electrolysis it has been overlayed by a thicker sheet of gold over a thin base metal core. At the time, these were a little less expensive that solid gold. It has had some wear and the outer gold shell is coming away from the base metal in places, but it is stable and still suitable for light wear.
The North Irish Horse was a yeomanry regiment raised in the northern counties of Ireland in the aftermath of the Second Boer War. During the first world war, it was one of the first non-regular units to be deployed to France and the Low Countries with the British Expeditionary Force in 1914 and fought with distinction both as mounted troops and later as a cyclist regiment, achieving eighteen battle honours. The regiment was reduced to a single man in the interwar years and re-raised for World War II, when it achieved its greatest distinctions in the North African and Italian campaigns.
Sorry I do not have a ring sizer, but it measures approximately .75 to 1 inch inside diameter. A rare piece with nice sharp detail to the engraving.
