Rare Early Bronze NSDAP Desk Eagle.

Large gilt bronze NSDAP desk or wall eagle showing the early SA or NSDAP eagle with wreath and swastika being held in its claws. It has the very early horizontal swastika. Nazi Party formally adopted the swastika or, what was also called in German, Hakenkreuz "hooked cross" as its symbol in 1920, in its original horizontal form, used as a sign of peace and freedom for thousands of years. The Nazi Party was not the only party to use the swastika in Germany. A number of far-right nationalist movements adopted the swastika after the first world war. As a symbol, it became associated with the idea of a racially “pure” state. So, it was ordered to turn the swastika 45 degrees to stand apart from the rest. This plaque is cast in solid bronze and has been gilded, some of the gilt has now worn off leaving the dark toned bronze showing. It has a block on the back with a hole through the middle, this was to hold a metal easel, so it could stand self-supporting, this is missing and a piece of wire has been put through the hole, so it can hang. It measures 9.5 x 8 inches.
