WW1 Artillery Officers Sword with Belt, Hangers
A wonderful 1822 pattern Royal Field Artillery Officers Sword with a Fantastic traceable history. It is typical of this pattern in every way, and it has makers detail on the Ricasso of William Hutton & Sons Sheffield. It has been engraved on the Blade for its original owner H. G. Thorne. R.F.A. 1915. This refers to Lieutenant Herbert Gordon Thorne of the Royal Field Artillery, who was commissioned in 1915. He later became captain and served on the western front from October 1916. I was lucky to purchase this sword from its last owner, a retired Major and battery commander of Dragon battery Royal Artillery, this was his dress sword, which was refurbished and gifted to him when he was commissioned in the 1960’s. He dedicated his life to the RA and was fundamental in the testing of the early surface to air missile ‘Thunderbird’. The maker of the sword, William Hutton and Sons was a well-known silversmith in Sheffield although they did make some very high-quality officer’s swords during the great war. This sword comes in superb condition; the blade was replated in the 1960’s to bring it up to regulation standard and comes with its leather sword knot, RA blue webbing under belt and leather hangers, along with its original issue field leather scabbard and protection case made from canvas by the last owner, but this is a bit scruffy.
I am prepared to give further historic details of the last owner to the next owner in confidence.
