Victorian 1834/74 Household Cavalry Officers State Sword by Hawkes
The 1874 officers State Sword of the 1st Lifeguards. Probably one of the oldest and most costly patterns of swords still used by the British army. This one is the post 1874 variant with the insignia for the 1st Lifeguards below queen Victoria’s crown. It is in totally untouched condition, so the hilt is covered with years old patination. The blade is clean and free from rust and pitting although a darkish tone. The ricasso is maker marked ‘Hawkes & Co London Manufacturer to the Queen’ with the royal warrant cypher above and the back of the blade has an issue number of 1320.
It has its original plated scabbard with gilt brass embellishments; this is also in excellent condition with just light scratching and signs of age and wear here and there. A beautiful example of this type of sword original and used. It measures 43 inches long.
