Rare Death Plaque to Captain Flagg, Norfolk Regiment. Early Loos Casualty. Interesting WW1 death plaque to Allston Flagg, a unique name on the Commonwealth war graves, Allston Flagg was a Captain with the Norfolk regiment and was killed in action on 26th or 27th September 1915 most likely at the battle of Loos. Flagg must have been an interesting character, he was born in 1883 in Essex to a mother from Kent and a father from Canada, in the 1891 census the family group were living in Yorkshire and Allston’s father George was a Sergeant instructor with the 2nd E.Y.A volunteers (East Yorkshire Artillery Volunteers). Further research shows Flagg leaving the country at the age of 18 and travelling to Canada, the Canadian 1901 census shows him as an army cadet in Ontario, he must have returned home at some stage and was sent to India, in 1909 he is serving with the 25th Punjabis and is entitled to the Indian general service medal at the rank of Lieutenant, in 1912 he was still in India. His medal index card shows his entitlement to a 15 star trio with the Norfolk regiment attached to the 58th rifles. Captain Flagg was killed in action on the 26th September 1915 at Loos, he is reported killed on the 26th or 27th, so an early casualty of this battle which started on the 25th. He is now remembered with honour at the Pont-Du-Hem Military Cemetery in France. His medals would have gone to his widow who was living in Edinburgh. The final document is a copy of his probate which has him living in Suffolk. A well travelled man with a long and fascinating army career.

Scarce Queens Rifle Volunteer Brigade Glengarry Badge. An interesting badge only used from the 1902 to 1908 period made of brass which looks like it was originally blackened, it is in good condition showing wear to the high points, the lugs are a little bent out of shape, but a good original and rare badge, the regiment served in south Africa during the Boer war and later became the Royal Scots.

WW1 1914 Princess Mary’s Christmas Tin. A good tin with most of its gilt still remaining, this one has a few blemishes on the top of the lid, these I am sure will polish off if you don’t mind losing the gilt finish as well, free from dings and dents, still a nice example. A Note. These attractive brass tins were the initiative of Princess Mary, the daughter of King George V. Princess Mary organised a public appeal which raised the funds to ensure that every service man or woman at the front received a Christmas present, this was widened to include every person 'wearing the King's uniform on Christmas Day 1914', about 2,620,019 servicemen and women. They include a variety of items, tobacco, cigarettes, writing paper, chocolates etc and a card from the King and a photograph of the princess herself, tins did differ with the contents they held, some didn’t hold tobacco but contained more sweets etc. Tins with their full contents still intact are getting very rare, on a bitter winters night in the trenches of France and Flanders, the contents of these tins, gave the men a feeling of home, so the items were soon consumed, untouched tins now command a premium when they come onto the market.

Superb WW1 Trio to Nurse Dodd, Served Egypt. A wonderful WW1 1915 star trio all awarded to Nurse Dora Dodd of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Dora Dodd served with the Red Cross VAD in Egypt from 11th September 1915, Egypt was hard place for voluntary nurses to start during the war, most likely she was posted to the 15th general hospital in Alexandria, this was the largest hospital and more likely to take probationary nurses. Not only did they have to deal with the wounded but also with most horrible of diseases, the nurses being no more immune to the diseases than the soldiers serving in the area. Although Dora Dodd is for the most part un-researched, it is easy to imagine the conditions she worked in, alongside nurses from Australia and other commonwealth countries as well as TFNS and QAIMNSR nurses. This lady needs further research to bring to life her experiences during the Great War. The medals are in excellent condition, also included is a couple of pages from her own photo album which contained few of her nursing service in Egypt, but I was allowed to take the photos relevant, there are two or three wonderful pictures of her with her patients, a view of a hospital ship, and one of the ambulances that brought and took the wounded from the battlefield and to the hospital ships docked in Alexandria. The photographs are rare and very valuable by themselves and the temptation to keep them is great, but I do hate splitting anything from its rightful place, so the original photos are included.

WW1 British War Medal to Judd. RA. An interesting BWM correctly named to 890515 B.Q.M.Sjt. F. Judd. R.A. the medal also comes with a copy of his medal index card, which shows Battalion Quarter Master Sergeant, F Judd’s is only entitled to the British war medal, this is probably because he stayed at home to train new recruits and volunteers, having seen no overseas service, his only entitlement would be the BWM. He also could have been an older soldier, so this medal is well worth researching because he may have been in service for a long time and possibly saw action in the Boer war or any other conflict during the latter part of the 19th century or the early part of the 20th century. The medal is in very good condition with a few contact marks to the rim, this would also subject it was mounted at some point with other medals; it would be nice to find out the full extent of this man’s service, he didn’t rise to the rank of BQMS for nothing.

WW1 era Officers Cap. 1918 pattern officers cap, a little worn here and there and the material sweat band is missing so the inside is a little untidy, however with a little TLC it could be brought back to its former glory. Not a bad size around a size 7 or a little larger.

WW2 War Medal Etc to Miss Burrell QAIMNSR. A nice little lot to a woman for research, it comprises of a WW2 war medal, a QEII Hospital 1953 Coronation medal, a wonderful studio photo of this lady and a single Qaimnsr silver collar dog which has been converted into a sweetheart type brooch, also an army SRN cloth badge which I missed photographing. Audrey M Burrell was serving with the Queen Alexandria’s Imperial Military Nursing Service towards the latter part of world war two, and she probably saw a short time overseas. Also included are various wartime and later nursing examination certificates, these give dates of exams past and to what level of nursing status she had achieved. It is unclear when she joined the Qaimnsr, she may have served much longer than it appears, and the certificates are from the General Nursing Council and not the army, so these are civil awards. She needs a little research to really sort out her service history and how long she was employed as a civilian nurse, a great little project that I am sure will prove a fascinating one. All items are in good original condition.
